When conducting an environmental assessment to determine the ecological effects of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), baseline environmental data is essential to establish ecosystem condition prior to the incident. EPA’s National Coastal Assessment (NCA) monitored the ecological condition of estuaries in the GOM annually from to , providing a.   Gulf of Mexico Tidal Wetlands research project at the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center, St. Petersburg, Florida.

The fourth volume in the Harte Research Institute’s landmark scientific series on the Gulf of Mexico provides a comprehensive study of ecosystem-based management, analyzing key coastal ecosystems in eleven Gulf Coast states from Florida to Quintana Roo and presenting case studies in which this integrated approach was tested in both the US and in : Detailed Description. To understand how changes in rainfall and temperature might affect coastal wetlands in the northern Gulf of Mexico, USGS researchers conducted field studies at 10 estuaries in five states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida).

The Ecological Condition of Estuaries in the Gulf of Mexico (PDF) (73 pp, 5 MB, JulyEPA R). This is the original () Gulf of Mexico regional component of NOAA’s Estuarine Living Marine Resources (ELMR) Project, a national database of ecologically and economically important fishes and invertebrates in the Nation’s estuaries.

The distribution and relative abundance are depicted in a consistent format for 44 species of fishes and invertebrates, in 31 estuaries in. The Gulf of Mexico is a vast natural resource encompassing the coastal areas of western Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, as well as a portion of Mexico.

Many estuaries flow into the Gulf of Mexico and serve as nursery grounds for fish, habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, shipping routes, and a source of recreation. Wetlands in the Gulf of Mexico region are being rapidly damaged or destroyed by human activities (e.g., flood control, agriculture, waste disposal, real estate development, shipping, commercial fishing, and oil and gas exploration and production) and natural CO 2, 2, 1, o «- 1, tf\ fli u 0 D Florida D Alabama D Mississippi D.

The vast majority of the loss (82 percent) occurred in fresh- water wetlands, both tidal and non-tidal. Nearly 60 percent of the total loss of coastal freshwater wetlands is attributed to "other development," which includes conversion of wetlands Coastal Wetlands Initiative: Gulf of Mexico Review to unknown or undetermined land uses (Figure 1).
